LO2 (P3:U21, M2:U21) - Planning and pitch preperation

LO2 (U21) - Be able to create a proposal and pitch for an original media product based on a given brief

This is a practice pitch for my North London based magazine on the genre rock. This was done as practice to gain feedback from my teacher and peers in order to improve it for the real pitch. This ensures I will be able to deliver a high quality final pitch, including all relevant and necessary information to enable it to be successful.

Practice pitch

Original presentation

I used this pitch in order to make amendments on specific parts that were not good enough or did not include the relevant information. From this feedback below, I was able to take it on board and make those improvements.

Feedback

Use the word 'masthead' instead of 'title' when talking about what fonts to use for the front cover of the magazine.

Make sure to narrow down the target audience because it is way too large.

Do not just aim the magazine at males, include females too.

Do not use NME as one of the competitors because they have shut down.

Distribute and advertise the magazine digitally instead of leaflets. This is because it is free to advertise online whereas I would need to hire people to hand deliver leaflets if I was to choose that option.

Include any legal or ethical issues

Amendments

I have changed my target audience. This used to be 18-35 and then 40-60, however I have narrowed it down to only 18-25 year olds.

I have changed my terminology in this presentation, for example calling the title a masthead.

I took out the magazine NME from my competitors list because they are no longer running.

I brought in 'Time Out' as a competitor. This is because I did not mention any local magazine competition and this covers that area.

I changed my method of marketing from physical to digital. This is more cost efficient and more people would be able to learn about the magazine.

I added a few legal and ethical issues to show what the magazine needed to do in order to stay away from being sued or getting a bad reputation.

Potential client questions

1) Do you think it would be more sensible to do a narrow target audience?

2) Is it ethically correct to only target men in this magazine?

3) Is physical marketing with delivery of leaflets the most cost efficient use of marketing to use?

4)Are there any legal or ethical issues you need to address?

Answers to potential questions

1) I believe that there are many age ranges that would be interested in this magazine for different reasons, therefore it is sensible to target them all, as this would only increase sales from all segments in the market. However, I understand that it is also not sensible, as I have to try to gain my audiences through marketing, and this would have to be more specifically targeted. Therefore I do take into consideration narrowing my target audience into only one of those sectors.

2) I can understand why this may be a problem because these days it is wrong to discriminate against any individual. However, for this magazine it is much more targeted at men. This is because there are nearly all male artists and bands to report on, and from research, way more males were interested. I will definitely take this into consideration and almost definitely will change this because it would be more ethical to include all genders and it would be wrong to eliminate half of people for my target audience.

3) I understand that this would not be a good method of marketing and distribution therefore I will choose a different method. This would be sung digital marketing to advertise the magazine and attract more of an audience because it is a more time and cost effective method of marketing and distribution, therefore I will change them to this immediately. In addition, it would reach a much higher amount of people.

4) Yes. There are many such as only targeting men, and making sure that the writing is all correct facts about the artists being reported on. I will include these in my improved presentation.
